Spring break is coming sooner than you think, so what better way to enjoy the season than spring training in Arizona? Based primarily in the Phoenix metropolitan area, Major League Baseball’s Cactus League is experienced throughout the Valley of the Sun – in well-known ballparks like the Tempe Diablo Stadium and the Peoria Sports Complex.
Starting in mid-February, and lasting roughly six weeks until Opening Day in early April, spring training brings World Series champions like the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers to Phoenix – allowing visitors and residents alike to enjoy one-half of the MLB right in Valley of the Sun stadiums.
So find your favorite team, grab your glove, and catch the 2012 Cactus League spring training season.
Salt River Fields at Talking Stick
Set in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, better known as south Scottsdale, the Salt River Fields at Talking Stick is one of the newer spring training facilities in the MLB. Salt River Fields is home to the Cactus League’s Colorado Rockies and local Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training.
HohoKam Park – also known as HohoKam Stadium and Dwight W. Patterson Field – is a spring training facility set in central Mesa. During the days of the Cactus League, HohoKam Park is the training facility of the legendary Chicago Cubs.
If you’re a fan of the Chicago White Sox or the Los Angeles Dodgers, then you’re in luck. During spring training, these Cactus League members head to Camelback Ranch ballpark in Phoenix. With a capacity of 13,000 people, Camelback Ranch can seat more baseball fans than any other ballpark in the Cactus League.
Set in – you guessed it – Goodyear, the Goodyear Ballpark is a scenic stadium found in the western part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. During spring training, the Goodyear Ballpark plays host to Cactus League staples, the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians.
Located in the northwestern Valley of the Sun suburb of Surprise, Surprise Stadium is a 10,000-seat spring training facility for the members of the Cactus League. Surprise Stadium welcomes fans of the Kansas City Royals and Texas Rangers during spring training.
Home to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim during spring training, the Tempe Diablo Stadium is a ballpark set in the eastern Phoenix suburb of Tempe. This Cactus League training facility seats 10,000 baseball fans, and is convenient to the nearby nightlife of Tempe.
Set in southwest Phoenix, the Maryvale Baseball Park is a Cactus League spring training facility ready to seat 10,000 baseball fans. Host of the Milwaukee Brewers during spring training, the ballpark is a 56-acre second home for the Brew Crew.
Set right in the Valley of the Sun, the Phoenix Municipal Stadium is a 9,000-seat ballpark and spring training facility. During the Cactus League season, the Phoenix Municipal Stadium is home to World Series champions, the Oakland Athletics.
Set in western Phoenix, the Peoria Sports Complex is the spring home of the Seattle Mariners – a nice break from the rain for the Hawks – and the San Diego Padres. These west coast Cactus Leaguers find themselves right at home in this 11,000-seat stadium during spring training.
Scottsdale Stadium, the 12,000-seat ballpark in the eastern part of the Phoenix metropolitan area, is another impressive Cactus League spring training facility. Home to recent World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants, in February and March, Scottsdale Stadium is convenient to the many restaurants, galleries and boutiques of downtown Scottsdale.
