A 30 minute drive south of the metropolitan Phoenix area is Casa Grande, a community that combines desert living with history and superb shopping. Casa Grande Ruins National Monument near Casa Grande AZ
Spanish for "Big House," the remains of this four-story structure and walled village near CasaGrande AZ were built by the Hohokam in the mid-1300s. The monument is one of the largest and most mysterious prehistoric structures ever built in North America. There is also a visitor center and ranger talks. Casa Grande Valley Historical Society Museum in Casa Grande AZ
Museum exhibits take us back to the beginnings of Casa Grande AZ, when work on the railroad stopped in 1879. The museum houses over 3,000 artifacts and includes period rooms that capture the region's Victorian era. You'll also learn about the outlaws Billy Stiles and the Baron of Arizona. Picacho Peak State Park near Casa Grande AZ
Picacho Peak, near Casa Grande Arizona was a landmark for those early explorers traveling the desert. Jesuit priest Father Kino mentioned Picacho Peak in records of his journeys, and in 1775, the DeAnza Expeditions passed by the Peak. Many more were to follow, including the forty-niners who passed through on their way to California. This was also the site of the Arizona's only Civil War battle. Every March, "The Civil War in the Southwest" comes alive again as over two hundred re-enactors converge on Picacho Peak on foot and horseback. The park offers hiking and picnicking.
