Chinle (pronounced Chin-lee) is near the geographic center of the Navajo Nation, the largest tract of land reserved for American Indians in the United States. The land is held in trust by the Federal Government for the Navajo People. Chinle was originally established as a government settlement along the south bank of the de Chelly fork of the Chinle Wash and 1 mile west of the mouth of the Canyon de Chelly.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle AZ
Pronounced d'shay, this canyon is still home to many Navajos living a traditional life. The monument marks the ruins of prehistoric Pueblo Indians, who lived in this canyon for a thousand years (between AD 350 and 1300), and is also the center of the Navajo Reservation. More than 100 prehistoric dwellings dot the sandstone canyon and can be seen from rim drives, a short hike, or one of the Navajo-run jeep tours that take you right into the canyon for an intimate look at the well-preserved ruins.
