Dead Horse Ranch State Park is located in Cottonwood, across from the Verde River and adjacent to the Coconino National Forest. This central Arizona state park offers a variety of recreational activities. Whether hiking along one of the many trails, or finding the perfect spot for a picnic, fishing, canoeing or kayaking in the river, there are many opportunities for fun here. The mild temperatures of the park's 3,300 ft elevation allow visitors to spend quality time in this beautiful spot in Arizona.
The park's river and lagoons are a wonderful habitat for birds and reptiles. Gray Fox, Coyote, Jackrabbit, and Mule Deer are among mammals spotted in the park. While visiting Cottonwood, consider staying with Best Western hotels - centrally located to many area attractions including Jerome State Historic Park and Montezuma Castle National Monument.
Montezuma Castle National Monument
In 1906, Montezuma Castle National Monument was one of four historical sites first declared a National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt. Because of this vision, it is now one of the “best preserved prehistoric cliff dwellings” in America. The legacy of the Sinagua people continues, allowing future generations to admire this homestead.
A self-guided loop trail leads visitors past the five-story cliff dwelling to admire it from a distance. Visitors are no longer allowed to enter the 20-room limestone dwelling in order to protect it, but a virtual tour of the ruins is available. While visiting Camp Verde in northern Arizona, consider staying with Best Western hotels in Cottonwood, a short drive from the Monument.
Tuzigoot National Monument
Tuzigoot National Monument is a pueblo built by the Sinagua Indians in A.D. 1000, sitting atop of 42 acres near Cottonwood, Arizona. The pueblo contains approximately 110 rooms on two and three floors. A self-guided loop trail is available for touring the pueblo, as well as views of the Verde River and overlook of Tavasci Marsh.
The monument is located in northern Arizona below the Mogollon Rim, approximately 52 miles south of Flagstaff. Convenient lodging is available with Best Western hotels, located south of the monument in the Cottonwood area.
